About Me

I was born at a small village Gazipur, South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal in 1987. I began painting at age 4 without a teacher. My subject of paintings was the natural surroundings of my home. Slowly, I became conscious of the world outside my home and of the complex drama of humanity with its joys and misery. At age 15 I was featured in my first exhibition in Kolkata at Gaganendra Shilpa Prodorshashala Art Gallery in 2002. Later exhibitions for my work were also held at the following: - Birla Academy of Art & Culture (2004, 2005, 2007) - Swabhumi (2005) - Artists Circle, I.T.C., Sonar Kolkata, Taj Bengal Hotel, Japon Chitra Art Gallery (2007) - Academy of Fine Arts, Chemould Art Gallery in Shillong (2008) I don't know why I began painting, but the inspiration of my family encouraged me to persist as an artist. To me painting is a language for expressing myself. My paintings protest social injustice and also depict the drama and affairs of humanity. As I am from a village, I interprets the texture of forests and natural surroundings as well as poverty and hunger, represented for example, as the skeleton of a dog. The skeletons of plants and trees are also used in my work. Some ideas for his work have come from sitting on buses and observing the expressions, demeanor and conversation of passengers. But mostly my ideas come from my own mind and dreams while asleep. The media of most of my paintings is acrylic-on-canvas but I also uses mixed media (oil color, acrylic, pen, pencil, distorted cloth, pastel). One technique I created is by scratching the canvas with paint on my hands. Some of my paintings are done by finger/hand as well as kitchen utensils, particularly spatula.
